Hello from Reid Park International Academy. We are a magnet school, located in Charlotte, NC, with both a French Immersion and English IB component. The students in the immersion section have their lessons taught all day long in French. The English students have 30 minutes of French instruction daily. Our school prepares students for the middle school pre-International Baccalaureate program, which leads to the high school IB program. Our fifth grade class consists of 11 girls and 13 boys. Following are messages from some of our students.

Hello my name is Ronnie Moore. I am in fifth grade at Reid Park International Academy.

At Reid Park we have about 600 students in the whole school. In every classroom there are 4 computers. In our classroom we have baby toads. Both of our baby toads died and the mother toad died too. Everone in our class was very sad. In this class we have 24 students.

My name is Jaquis Jamal Thompson, and I'm 10 years old and live in Charlotte, NC. I go to Reid Park International Academy. We have about 600 students in the school. At Reid Park we have big class rooms. Our class room has 24 students and the school is longer than a giant's body and it's the best.

Hi my name is John Pressly, and I am 10 years old. My birthday is on March 8, 1989. My favorite sport is soccer. I play soccer in the fall and spring. I am good at soccer. My school has lots of people in it. My school is called Reid Park International Academy. On both sides of my school is a small forest. In front of my school is another school. My school is fun. It snowed here in Charlotte this winter. In Charlotte it does not snow a lot. I wish it snowed all the time in Charlotte. Bye.

We will send more messages soon. Snow is very unusual in Charlotte, and we have had 4 snow days this year. We are in school on Presidents' Day as a result of the unexpected days off. We will be in session on another teacher workday and two days of our spring break. The March teacher workday falls on the day after we return from our class trip to Washington, DC. I wonder how many students will come to school that day?

Hi from Fairfield Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA.

Virginia is a state in the middle of the east coast of the United States of America. Virginia Beach is in the very southeast corner of Virginia. Our city has about 450,000 residents. We border the Atlantic Ocean to the east and Chesapeake Bay to the north. Our southern boundary is the border with the state of North Carolina. Our school is about 10 miles from the ocean and 7 miles from Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Beach and the 6 cities immediately around us are called "Tidewater" or "The Tidewater Area" because of the amount of water we have that is directly effected by the ocean tides. This is a really good place to live if you like the water.

We have about 500 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. We call ourselves "The Falcons".

Here are introductions from some of our students:

Hi, my name is Nicholas Alexander, but I go by Alex. I live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. Directly behind my house is a stream, if you go to the left you will find Lake James, to the right is a pipe that leads to the Elizabeth River. I enjoy playing Football, Baseball, and Golf. Some of my favorite breakfast foods are bacon, eggs, and waffles, lunch sub and corndog, and dinner ham, chicken, and almost any kind of pig. I am a descendent of John Hancock. On rainy days I enjoy to playing video games and watching TV. I work every other Saturday; I am a salisoter (I pass out fliers for a roof and housing company) and my boss tells me I always put the most effort forth because I run. I have earned the nickname speedy from my partners. We pair up 2 per team (one per side of a street) and each team has a different street. We get a lunch break at 12:00 till 12:30 and stop around 3:00. We get aching legs but its worth it and it's a good exercise. That's how I do, like, and have fun with life.

Hi there from 4P @ Pacific Academy, Surrey, BC, Canada.

We recently brainstormed some of our uses for water and this is what we came up with.

Living, heating/cooling, electricity, drinking, sewage, washing dishes, washing clothes, washing cars, washing food, irrigation, brushing our teeth, sewage, car radiators, water beds, ice, snow sports, keeping our bodies clean, cooking, water sports, transportation: steam trains, boats, ferries, mixing instant foods.

We also had one of our parents come in as a guest today and he talked about the quality of our drinking water in Vancouver. He is one of the environmental engineers who is in charge of our water quality. It was very interesting to find out how we get the water that comes out of our taps.

Vancouver is on the West coast of Canada. Sometimes we call it the Wet Coast because we get so much rain.

My name is Carly Holt and I have been informed that your class of 34 kids have been wondering about Winnipeg, Manitoba. Canada is located in the North America. We live in Winnipeg, which is the capital city of Manitoba. My class and I gad a vote on our favorite food. The vote was anonymous, we all love pizza. The sprots that are most often played are football, basketball, tennis and, basball. My hobbies are singing acting and dancing. My class and I love to have parties whenever possible. After school some girls like to listen to music, go shopping, or just hang around. Although the boys may get together and watch the super bowl, have a small football game, or they are lazy and become couch potatoes. We all hate homework! Who couldn't? Anyways, enjoy your nice, warm winter, while us Canadians freeze our little fingers off.

My name is Maya Thau-Eleff. I am writing to you and your class on behalf of my entire class. There are 19 of us and we are 11 and 12 years old. We go to a Jewish school on Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

In our school we have recycling bins in every classroom and in our multipurpose room. We are very consious of our environment. Our playstruture is made out of recycled materials. Right now in Science we are doing projects about Environmental issues:Acid Rain, The Greenhouse Effect, Global Warming, Water Pollution, and Tropical Rainforests, which is the one that I'm doing. One of the things I have learned is that in the Dinosaur age, one species went extinct per 10 years. In the Rainforests, tens of thousands of species get destroyed every year.

Our grade 6's just had our "Shabbaton". It is a religious Jewish sleepover at the school. Each year there's a theme. Ours was RESPECT. We focused mainly on respect for the environment. I learned a lot.

What are some things that your school does to help our environment? Please write me back.

Hello! My name is Susan Schipper and I am working on this branch of the online water project that we are doing with your school. We are in grade 6 at the Gray Academy of Jewish Education. The whole school is divided up into three seperate schools. Shore Early Years (grades 1-4), Simkin Middle School (our school, grades 5-8), Joseph Wolinsky Collegiate (grades 9-12). The bulk of our class's favourite foods are ice cream and pizza. We enjoy playing many sports, especially soccer, basketball, baseball and football. Everyone's favourite subject varied, but (suprise, surprise) for the most part it was gym. That's really an activity, but we count it as a subject.

Our school has many things that are to our liking. We have intramurals which are different sports played at recess time. For instance, for basketball, you can chooseto participate by forming your own team of four and playing, but it's not mandatory. Also, we have "Got Milk?" contests one week every month. To play, all you have to do is bring milk to school and bring it to the office, and you get a scratch-and-win card with three circles on it. If each of the circles says the same thing (e.g., each of the circles says eraser, eraser, eraser), you've won an eraser. We have 8 periods to a day, and our main subjects are Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Hebrew, Torah, Judaic Studies and French. We have French and Judaic Studies four days a cycle, but the rest of the subjects we have every day. In social studies we are learning about the Natives, in math we are doing place value, in science we are doing we arefinishing up our unit on the environment, and moving on to weather. In Judiac studies, Hebrew and Torah, we are learning more about the torah, and the Hebrew language and culture. In French we are studying the country of Canada.

We are all excited to be doing this on-line water project. We hope this will be a good experience and be fun. Ww also want to learn more about your school and the other schools thast are doing the project. We hope to get a letter from you soon, and start the prject soon.

We are a grade six class at Simkin Middle School, which is located in the Asper Jewish Community Campus in Winnipeg, Canada.

Winnipeg is a wonderful city in Manitoba, Canada. It is located in the prairies so the ground is mainly flat. We get freezing winters and very hot summers. The population of Winnipeg is about 650 000 with 43 different cultural groups.

Every year we have a festival called Festival de Voyageur to celebrate our French- Canadian heritage. It is a winter festival where lots of singing, dancing, eating and crafts take place. There is a snow sculpture contest which people can enter to show off their skill. This year it was the 30th annual and it was very excting.

In Winnipeg there is also a place called The Forks National Historic Site, or the Forks for short. It is where the Assinaboine River and the Red River meet. The site is filled with historey and importance. Many businesses run there along with the Forks building itself. It is a fun place to go.

Another interesting place is the St. Boniface Museum. It is the oldest building in Winnipeg and the largest oak log structure in North America. It depicts the lives of the French and the Metis people. Before it was a mueseum, it was the original Grey Nun's convent.

There are two huge forts in Winnipeg that were built for trading reasons long ago. The Hudson's Bay Company between the years 1830 and 1852, built Lower Fort Garry. It is the oldest intact stone fur trading post in North America. Now the fort is open to the public to walk around and in the restored buildings and talk to costumed characters about life in the 1830's. The other fort was Upper Fort Gary, which was built in the 1830's. It was another fur trading post until it was demolished except for one gate in 1885. You can still see the gate today.

A lovely place to go in the winter, spring, fall or summer is the Assiniboine Park. It has 376 acres for winter sports, eating, walking, cycling, meeting friends and shopping to name a few. There is an outdoor pavilion where you can see concerts, ballets and plays. During the summer you can also got to the wonderful Teddy Bear's Picnic, which is sponsered by the Children's Hospital. It is so much fun for little kids.

Winnpeg, with its many different cultures, is flavorful in the range of restaurants. You can enjoy Greek, Japanese, Ukrainian, Italian, Norht African and Mexican for an example. The best of all though, is the homegrown foods such as goldeye!

In the way of sports, it varies. While kids our age love any kind, there are a few profound sports teams to Winnipeg. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers may not do too well in football but our Goldeyes baseball team and our hockey team, thew Manitoba Moose are pretty good. We also have our wonderful Royal Winnipeg Ballet, which is outstanding. Just last summer we had the chance to hold the Pan Am Games, which was pretty exciting. It was like the whole summer had Pan Am fever!

I hope you enjoy reading this letter and learning about Winnipeg! Sincerely,

Mrs. Doctoroff's Grade 6 class
