You are required to complete the following tasks during the scope of this course.

Required assignments:

  1. Journal Article Review
  2. Software Evaluation
  3. Thematic Resources
  4. Lesson Plan Integration
  5. MicroWorlds Project

A1: Journal Article Review  Due: Oct. 13
Select an article from an educational technology journal (not older than 1995) or an article from the Computers in Education (Dushkin) book.

Read the article and write a one page review  (see example provided).
Prepare a short (5 minute) presentation using PowerPoint
Turn in: a copy of the article, the review, and the presentation hand-out.

A2: Software Evaluation  Due: Oct. 20
Using criteria discussed in class, preview at least 5 pieces of software. Use the Software Evaluation Form  for at least 2 software titles.
Be sure to list the software type: drill and practice, tutorial, simulation, problem solving, tool or programming.

Write the names of the other 3 software titles for which you did not fill out evaluations (but reviewed).

Turn in: 1 copy of each review/evaluation (word processed)

A3: Finding Thematic Resources  Due: Nov. 3
Using criteria discussed in class, choose a form from a practicing teacher to find 5 resources on the theme they listed. Find at least one software resource, at least one Internet project, and at least one web site. The additional two resources may be any of those three types of resources.
 

Turn in: 2 sets of everything. Include the filled out form  (word processed) and printouts of the websites.
One set will be for me to grade and the other one will go directly to the classroom teacher.

A4: Integrated Lesson Plan  Due: Nov. 17
Part 1:  Write a lesson plan (following the template linked below) on a topic of your choice.

Part 2:  On September 29th we will look at educational Web sites. You will need to include at least 3 Web sites that are related to your topic.

Part 3:  On October 13th  we will also use a template to make our own Web page. These 3 sites will be included. Make sure the Web sites link to the appropriate place.

Turn in: Word processed lesson plan (stapled), Web page template printed out  and a copy on a floppy disk. Name the file with your first name and last initial (up to 8 characters) and the extenstion .htm (For example rhondac.htm)

A5: MicroWorlds Project  Due: Dec. 8
You will design and create a MicroWorlds project on a topic of use in the K-12 classroom. Make a storyboard or design document (first!) depicting the layout of your project (Example in class).

Include the following components:

  •  Topic useful in the classroom (math, social studies, language arts, etc.)
  •  Minimum of 10 pages
  •  Appropriate navigational buttons
  •  Animation (moving turtles)
  •  Minimum of 5 procedures called from the program or turtles
  •  Sound or music on at least one page
  •  Text boxes on at least two pages
  •  Creation and use of at least one original or modified shape

    Turn in:
    (1) Design document
    (2) Project printed out (each page) including a cover sheet.
          On the cover sheet include your name, project title, intended audience, and a brief description of the project
          and  its use in the classroom. Staple all pages in the upper left corner.
    (3) Copy your project onto the instructor's jazz drive or J: drive on the teaching station.
    (4) Show your project to the class.
