Short Essay
Instructions: Pick two of the four questions listed below and respond in a separate email for each chosen question to gknezek@tenet.edu and arrowood@coefs.coe.unt.edu by 5 pm Wed. July 18, 2001. Do your own work but use any of the resources (library, web, etc.) at your disposal. Make your response not shorter than one paragraph but not longer than one normal printed page.
9a. (1 point). Briefly describe the Technology Applications TEKS in terms of scope and purpose. What grade levels do they cover? What strands are common throughout? By when is a Texas student supposed to be computer literate? What is the difference between the ending point of the TA-TEKS and the NETS standards for students?
9b. (1 point). Describe a theorist of interest to you that you think might have ideas appropriate for use in the school environment you described for assignment 1. Cite at least one study/piece of evidence that would cause your reader to believe that your approach is a good idea. Briefly describe the intervention with technology you have in mind. Basically, defend your position/approach.
9c. (1 point). Do you think that standardized competency-based testing (TAAS, etc.) is a good idea? State your position pro or con and defend why. Do you have personal/professional experiences you can describe that support your position?
9d. (1 point). At what level do you think Lego Technics and other physical
manipulative/robotic systems fit in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
scheme? List and describe at least one TA TEK that could be realized
through such a device while simultaneously fulfilling one or more specified
Foundation Area TEK. Briefly sketch how you might organize a unit of instruction
that would incorporate both the technology and the foundation side of the
curriculum.
